As the sun sunk past the horizon, the field behind Julia’s house was illuminated in a flash. A bonfire reared up against the darkness of Avernus. Julia absentmindedly stoked it, rearranging some of the charred branches at the fire’s edge.
“So Connell really does have an accomplice,” Cat said as he walked over to throw more wood in. “Do you have any information on a member of the train crew with a zebra aspect? The one Phoebe mentioned.”
“Here,” She clicked through a few screens on her phone. “His name is Colby White. He’d been working on the trains for 3 years. On the report his family said he’s a good son, has a fiancée too. Coworkers said he was friendly. No debt or problems like that.”
“It doesn’t make sense. I was expecting him to be a new hire, someone that Connell planted. Why would a person like him murder the conductor?”
“We don’t know if he did, just that he was probably involved.”
“Where is he now?”
“No clue. He’s missing just like Connell.”
