Each feather can grant any wish you make. This is the true power of the Firebird. Strength, wealth, beauty, love, and blood all pour from its plumage. At the end of 25 years its fledglings1 will gather before it, for a purpose we do not yet understand. We do suspect, to the disappointment of many young men seeking glory, that only a fledgeling is capable of capturing the whole creature. Great wars will be waged and won in the time of the Firebird. Surely, before it slumbers again, the world will be transformed.
Some may say that the Firebird is a creature of the fae- but this is not true! The old texts describe those who have been visited by the Firebird. They are not attacked or stolen. They return as changed people. Special people, for the Firebird has made the deepest desires in their hearts come true.
It is unknown when the Firebird will return to us. It has been nearly 900 years since it was last sighted. A new millennium looms, but still feels so far away for me. I must say that the idea of dying before the Firebird awakens again pains me greatly.
1. The word “fledgling” to describe those who have taken Firebird feathers is a modern invention by the late Dr. Ivan Morevna (Morevna, 1994). It was included in this translation in order to remain consistent with modern publications concerning the Firebird.
